Smartbox is on an ambitious growth journey through acquisitions and organic growth and a unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced international lawyer to be based at our headquarters in Dublin.

Reporting into the Group Legal Director, the successful candidate will be expected to provide legal support to the IT and Digital functions, to include negotiating and drafting IT,  digital contracts and terms and conditions for websites (BtoC) across 12 European countries. He/ she would  develop and promote IT,  and digital legal expertise and consumer’ expertise within the company in order to support overall European digital and IT strategies, in close collaboration with the Chief Information Officer & Chief Digital Officer. 


The successful candidate will have already demonstrated their expertise in IT and digital legal matters, and benefit from working knowledge of EU data privacy legislation. He/she will have 7-10 years' experience ideally gained from an international law firm and/or from a  company as an in-house counsel. He/ she will be accustomed to outsourcing contract management and be fluent in English and French.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced E-commerce and Data Protection lawyer who wants to work with a high-performing team and rise to the challenge of maintaining and governing E-commerce, data protection and  consumers laws while assuring business alignment and compliance across the Enterprise.

Experience in consumer law is essential, with knowledge of competition law representing a plus.

Key Responsibilities include:

To engage with and drive the ongoing GDPR compliance and assure compliance going forward.

This role will entail thorough commercial support including the drafting and negotiation of contracts, monitoring existing contractual relationships and strategic involvement in discussion relating to the products. The successful candidate will provide assistance and advice on legal and regulatory issues, remaining abreast of any relevant applicable regulatory and legal changes, and interacting efficiently with other parts of the business such as Digital, IT and marketing. He/she will also proactively manage disputes and litigation, with the aid of outside counsel, and reinforce and proactively promote a compliance culture within the consumer business.

Essential Competencies/ skills:

  • Law Master’s degree in Digital, Consumer or business laws with knowledge of European law
  • Erasmus is a plus or a LLM in another European country
  • Approx. 8-12 years’ experience in total, in a company as in-house lawyer and in European/international law firm.
  • Used to working in a diverse multicultural work environment

  • Business Literacy: Ability to understand the business, to take the business vision and translate it into a business needs and ecommerce needs.
  • GDPR Familiarity: Understanding of EU General Data Protection Regulations, their impacts on business and technology and what the key priorities should be
  • Language and communication: Fluency in English and an ability to communicate clearly at both business and technical levels. Ability to translate business requirements, flows and processes into technical data needs. French or another major European language would be an advantage
  • Issue Management: Ability to identify, analyse and prioritise issues arising and know when to escalate.
  • Problem Solving and Decision-Making: Ability to analyze and define a problem, evaluate alternatives, find a solution, understand how and when to make a choice.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to recognise the future impact of legal decisions on the big-picture; ability to understand and communicate how they relate to short and long-term deliverables
